ABOUT THE PROJECT

There have been many book related art projects in recent times but The Postal Book Project 2012 aims to take it a step further. Set up by two artists based in Brighton and Oxford, the project aims to rescue old, damaged and perhaps unloved books and give them a new life by revitalizing and reinventing them.
This project hopes to capitalize on all forms of art by giving individuals the opportunity to work with books in a way they have never done before.

On completing their section, the artist will post the book to the next anonymous artist or pass it onto a friend. In doing this, we hope to breathe fresh life into the books and the postal service through engaging with other artists all over the country and maybe the world.

Expected to finish in 2013, this is a long term project which will culminate on each book being exhibited online, in full. It is a project for anyone who wants to celebrate and engage with books in a new way.

The Brief

It doesn’t matter what your craft or how good you think you are at it, we want you to engage with these books in any way with any media.

Each book will be sent out with no bias and you may recieve more than one throughout the length of the project.

When you recieve a book, we’d love for you to check it in on Twitter so we can map out each book’s own journey and let everyone know how they’re getting on.
You will be allowed to work with a book for up to a week. Depending on the length of the book you may be allowed to fill numerous pages or just one.

You may contribute in any way. We only ask that your contribution is a response to the book itself. You might take inspiration from the cover or the content, or maybe just the font or a single word on a single page. Perhaps you’ll respond to the book as a physical object or let your mind run away with ideas about the books themes.
The only restrictions are:
- that the book can be closed enabling it to sit on a shelf and strong enough to be manhandled.
- you may not remove or alter any previous work
That’s it!
Once you’re done, you can either pass the book on by hand or request to send it onto the next anonymous address.
